Ayurveda is a 5,000 year old medical system that has changed the lives of millions of people.  The word ‘Ayurveda’ comes from ‘Ayus’ meaning life and ‘Veda’ meaning science.  It is known as the ‘Science of Life’ because it teaches us how to achieve a healthy balanced life that is in tune with nature. Ayurvedic medicine recognizes the uniqueness of every individual and advocates a personal wellness regimen to reestablish balance for the body, mind, and spirit.  Complete health addresses all of the aspects of our being, not just the physical body.

doshas

The doshas are life forces that are responsible for health as well as disease in the body and mind.  When in balance, they contribute to the smooth functioning of our physiology, but when out of balance they create pathology or disease.  The three doshas in Ayurveda are Vata, Pitta, and Kapha.  These three life forces are combinations of the five elements, Ether, Air, Fire, Water, and Earth.  Ether and Air combine to form Vata; Fire and Water combine to form Pitta; and Water and Earth combine to form Kapha.

The three doshas are present within each of us, but in different quantities.  One's individual doshic makeup is called prakriti, or constitution.  Knowing one's prakriti is essential in order to make dietary and lifestyle choices that are supportive for health, rather than detrimental to health.  Click on this link to find out your unique constitution.
